PRINCESS OF TIDES

Perhaps bored by vacationing in Klosters, Nevis and other epicenters
of Euro-glamour, or perhaps taking her leisuretime cues from
the Clinton family, PRINCESS DIANA is spending her August holiday
on Martha's Vineyard. (The young princes have been with their
father in Greece but may join their mum this week.) The royal
recreationist is staying in a clapboard house rented by the
Brazilian Ambassador to the U.S. and his wife. Her hostess said
Di chose the Massachusetts island because she thought the residents
would be nice people "who would be very protective of her." The
princess was right; she has, in fact, managed to elude the press.
She will also elude Bill, Hillary and Chelsea, who will begin their
vacation there after her departure.

TURNING IN HIS BADGE

As NYPD Blue's Detective John Kelly, DAVID CARUSO possesses a
potent blend of swagger and soulfulness. Last season the actor
landed on the cover of GQ and became TV's reigning hunk; he has
also garnered an Emmy nomination. Now, after shooting the thriller
Kiss of Death, Caruso wants to pursue a film career full time. He
will reportedly leave NYPD early this season even though he settled
a salary dispute with ABC last week. Caruso's likely successor?
Former L.A. Law associate Jimmy Smits.

STAKE-IN-THE-HEARTTHROB

BRAD PITT expertly portrays trailer-park renegades who have
little use for shampoo. Yet when director Neil Jordan (The Crying
Game) was casting the venerable Louis for the film version of
Interview with a Vampire (which also stars Tom Cruise), he chose
the smoldering star. Louis, turned vampire after the loss of his
beloved wife, is "all heart, all feeling," explains Jordan.
"The actor had to be extraordinary in his emotional intensity.
Brad wil be stretched in ways he's never been stretched in movies."

SEEN & HEARD

When ELIZABETH TAYLOR checked into the Betty Ford Center for
the first time in 1983, few realized the extent of her drug problem.
During a five-year period in the '80's, she was issued 1,000
prescriptions for 28 different sleeping pills, tranquilizers and
painkillers by three doctors. The physicians, reprimanded by a
medical board, say Taylor's back, neck and leg pain warranted the
high doses.

JOHN GRISHAM, the purveyor of beach-blanket legal thrillers,
last week sold film rights to his debut novel for $6 million. The
sale of A Time to Kill--which was originally rejected by 25
publishers--topped Grimsham's previous movie deal by $2.25 million.
